Availability and use of woody plants in a agrarian reform settlement in the cerrado of the state of Goiás, Brazil Acta Botanica
Tunholi,Vanessa Pessanha; Ramos,Marcelo Alves; Scariot,Aldicir.
Protected areas are important sources providing plant resources for human populations, and contributing to the livelihood and income of families. To test the ecological apparency hypothesis, that there is positive relationship between the visibility of a species and its use, we conducted an ethnobotanical survey in the protected area of the Itaúna rural settlement in the municipality of Planaltina, in the state of Goiás, in central Brazil. The phytosociological parameters were obtained in 5.6 ha area of the Brazilian cerrado (savanna), and the ethnobotanical survey conducted with semi-structured interviews with 75 people. There was a weak positive correlation between the use value and the phytosociological parameters. A principal component analysis showed...

Conservation priorities of useful plants from different techniques of collection and analysis of ethnobotanical data Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lucena,Reinaldo F.P. de; Lucena,Camilla M.; Araújo,Elcida L.; Alves,Ângelo G.C.; Albuquerque,Ulysses P. de.
This study analyzes three methods of data analysis to verify which one would be more appropriate to get information aiming the conservation, selecting the use value (VU) inventory in situ and conservation property index (IPC). It was developed in in Northeast Brazil, via interviewed householders (46 informants). The VU was calculated considering only the effective use of plants; the inventory in situ was made through the frequency of species occurrence in homes; and the IPC combining ethnobotanical and phytossociological data. It was observed a similar cast of the indicated species by VU and inventory in situ, being different from the IPC cast. As this study sought to analyze the best technique for species identification which were needing conservationist...

Guide to the Ex-Ante Socio-Economic Evaluation of Marine Protected Areas AgEcon
Grafton, R. Quentin; Akter, Sonia; Kompas, Tom.
Marine protected areas (MPA) potentially offer a wide range of use and non-use benefits. These include critical habitat protection, conservation of marine biodiversity, recovery of threatened and endangered marine species, and increased biomass of targeted marine species. To assess whether such benefits exceed the potential costs, we provide the first-ever comprehensive ex-ante, socio-economic guide to MPA evaluation. Our framework shows how to quantify four key values of MPAs: consumptive, non-consumptive, indirect, and non-use values. The framework also shows how to use decision tools to determine the desirability of establishing MPAs. Overall, the guide offers the promise of improved information and better decision making for marine protected areas.

What's the Use? Welfare Estimates from Revealed Preference Models when Weak Complementarity does not Hold AgEcon
Herriges, Joseph A.; Kling, Catherine L.; Phaneuf, Daniel J..
The focal point of the revealed preference (RP) valuation literature, including recreation demand and random utility maximization (RUM) models, has been on eliciting the "use" value associated with environmental amenities; i.e., that portion of value associated with direct use of a resource. Maler's (1974) concept of weak complementarity is typically invoked to justify this focus. Indeed, weak complementarity explicitly or implicitly underlies most of the RP literature. In this paper, we consider the measurement of welfare in RP models when weak complementarity does not hold. In particular, the Kuhn-Tucker (KT) framework (e.g., Phaneuf et al. 2000) does not impose weak complementarity a priori, raising the possibility of rejecting weakly complementary in...
